How Edrophonium Chloride Affects PatientsEdrophonium is a medication that works quickly and lasts for about 10 minutes. It helps people with myasthenia gravis by stopping the breakdown of a chemical (acetylcholine) that stimulates muscles. When this chemical is present in higher amounts, it helps the muscles respond better to nerve signals. This medication is given as an injection and starts to work within 30-60 seconds.

How Edrophonium Chloride works in the bodyEdrophonium keeps acetylcholine active in the body for longer. Acetylcholine is a natural chemical that stimulates two types of receptors. Edrophonium stops an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase from breaking down acetylcholine, which keeps it active in the body for a longer period of time. This stimulation can have a variety of effects.
