Effectiveness
How Nortrel 7/7/7 Affects PatientsNorethisterone is a type of synthetic hormone taken by mouth. It can be used for birth control or to treat conditions related to hormones, like menopausal symptoms and endometriosis. Norethisterone acts like natural progesterone, but is more powerful. It changes cervical and endometrial function in the pelvic area and stops the hormones in the pituitary gland that help create eggs. There is a slight increased risk of getting breast cancer when taking oral contraceptives with progestins like norethisterone, so patients should be aware of this risk and do regular breast self-exams.
How Nortrel 7/7/7 works in the bodyNorethisterone works on target cells in the reproductive tract, breast, pituitary, hypothalamus, skeletal tissue, and central nervous system. It thickens cervical mucous to prevent sperm from entering the uterus. It also makes the uterus inhospitable for implantation and suppresses hormones from the pituitary gland that are needed for ovulation. When used with hormone therapy for menopausal women, it protects against endometrial hyperplasia. Norethisterone does not work on other steroid receptors, but it does have some androgen receptor agonism, which can cause side effects like acne and changes in serum
