How Casodex Affects Patients
Bicalutamide is a medicine used to treat prostate cancer. It is a nonsteroidal anti-androgen, meaning it blocks the action of male hormones (androgens) that stimulate the growth of prostate tissue, both normal and cancerous. Prostate cancer is largely affected by androgens, and can be treated with surgery or drugs that lower androgen levels. Bicalutamide is sometimes used as a single treatment, but it has not been proven to be as effective as reducing androgen levels.
How Casodex works in the body
Bicalutamide stops male hormones from attaching to cells in the prostate. This prevents these hormones from causing the prostate to grow, both normally and abnormally.
