Effectiveness

How Casodex Affects Patients

Bicalutamide is a medicine used to treat prostate cancer. It is a nonsteroidal anti-androgen, meaning it blocks the action of male hormones (androgens) that stimulate the growth of prostate tissue, both normal and cancerous. Prostate cancer is largely affected by androgens, and can be treated with surgery or drugs that lower androgen levels. Bicalutamide is sometimes used as a single treatment, but it has not been proven to be as effective as reducing androgen levels.

How Casodex works in the body

Bicalutamide stops male hormones from attaching to cells in the prostate. This prevents these hormones from causing the prostate to grow, both normally and abnormally.

My husband is taking Casodex as his only treatment option, since he cannot afford the Lupron shots. He's been on it for a while now and it's working well to keep him in remission. We're both very frustrated with how expensive this all is, but thankful that there are options available.

Casodex for Cancer of the Prostate Gland

Casodex has been working well for me so far. After four months of taking it, my PSA levels dropped from 10.7 to 3.1 and then down to 3.0 two weeks later. The only side effects I've experienced are some breast tenderness and swelling, as well as a decrease in ejaculate volume; but none of these have been too bad.
