Salt Lake City, UtahThis study compares semaglutide, together with a lower dose of insulin glargine, to a higher dose of insulin glargine in participants with type 2 diabetes. The study looks at how well the study medicines control blood glucose levels. Participants will either get semaglutide together with a lower dose of insulin glargine or a higher dose of insulin glargine. The study will last for about 47 weeks (approximately 11 months). Participants will have 9 clinic visits, 15 phone/video calls and 1 home visit. Positive Psychology for Post-Bariatric Surgery Patients
Salt Lake City, UtahThe goal of this waitlist-control design, pilot randomized controlled trial is to test feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a remotely-delivered dyadic positive psychology intervention for patients 2 years after bariatric surgery and their romantic partners (called ReConnect).
The main question it aims to answer is whether the intervention results in improvements in depressive symptoms for patients and partners. The additional questions it aims to answer are whether the intervention results in improvements in resilience, relationship satisfaction, eating and physical activity behaviors, and weight maintenance for those in the intervention versus waitlist control condition.
Participant couples randomly assigned to the intervention condition will engage in ReConnect for 8 weekly modules and associated positive psychology activities, some individually and some as a couple. Participant couples randomly assigned to the waitlist control condition will wait for 8 weeks to begin the 8 week intervention. All participants will fill out assessment measures at baseline, 8 weeks, and 16 weeks.

Ultrasonic Treatment for Food Addiction
Salt Lake City, UtahThis study will evaluate a new form of non-invasive deep brain therapy for food addiction. Low-intensity transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation will first be delivered using a range of stimulation parameters during psychophysical and physiological monitoring. A well-tolerated stimulation protocol will be selected for subsequent testing in a blinded randomized sham-controlled trial. Salt Lake City, UtahThe goal of this clinical trial is to determine the impact of omega-3 fatty acids on the production of anti-inflammatory effects and clinical improvement in people with depression who have not responded well to standard antidepressant treatment. Do omega-3 fatty acids added to ineffective antidepressant treatment increase production of compounds that reduce inflammation?
Is the increase in these anti-inflammatory compounds associated with a stronger antidepressant effect?
Participants taking antidepressants that have not worked completely will be assigned at random for a 12-week period to one of the following:

an inactive placebo

SLIMM + Semaglutide for Kidney Disease
Salt Lake City, Utah* Prolonged sitting (sedentary behavior) is a risk factor for decreased kidney function, obesity, diabetes and mortality. Prolonged sitting is associated with decreased kidney function and increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and death.
* In a previous pilot study funded by NIH, it was shown that a Sit Less, Interact and Move More (SLIMM) intervention targeting sedentary behavior in people with kidney disease was able to decrease prolonged sitting but that effect was not sustained.
* Therefore, the researchers are currently conducting a follow-up study named Sit Less, Interact and Move More (SLIMM) 2.
* This NIH funded study is conducted at the University of Utah and Stanford University.
* The purpose of this study is to see if guided resistance training (to improve muscle strength) and semaglutide (FDA approved diabetes and weight loss medication that might also improve physical function) can boost adherence to the SLIMM Intervention and reduce sedentary behavior.

Timing of Resistance Exercise for Insulin Sensitivity
Salt Lake City, UtahThe primary aim of this study is to evaluate if a single bout of AM vs PM resistance exercise has different effects on insulin sensitivity and sleep. A randomized cross-over trial be used to compare resistance exercise at two different times of the day. Each condition will take place in a laboratory setting. Each condition will consist of exercise, overnight sleep, and oral glucose tolerance tests the following day. The AM exercise will occur \~1.5 hours after habitual wake, and PM exercise will occur \~11 hours after habitual wake. After a 2-6 week washout, participants will complete the other condition. The hypothesis is that PM exercise will be more beneficial than AM exercise in improving insulin sensitivity. This study could identify if there is a better time of day to perform resistance exercise to decrease risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
