Haptic Device
for Numbness
The study will explore the use of a haptic device for sensory substitution in individuals with a movement disorder that has caused loss of plantar sensation. The haptic device consists of two components. The first element is a flexible insole with embedded pressure-sensing elements that transmit the spatial patterns of applied foot pressure over time. The second element is a haptic receiver with embedded actuators that vibrate or heat up in proportion to the transmitted pressure patterns, thus substituting the patient's lost plantar sensation.

Sleep-Promoting Interventions
for Stroke Rehabilitation
The SIESTA-Rehabilitation protocol combines two sleep-promoting interventions, (1) empowering nurses to reduce unnecessary disruptions and (2) a systematic protocol to screen, diagnose, and treat sleep-disordered breathing, to determine its impact on relevant sleep and rehabilitation outcomes in the acute inpatient stroke rehabilitation setting compared to the standard of care. Our primary outcome is change in Quality Indicator (QI) score, a measure that has replaced the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) in the inpatient setting at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, between admission and discharge.
