How Betaderm Affects Patients

Corticosteroids act on the body's natural hormones to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. They are very effective at treating certain conditions, but can require doses that are much larger than what the body produces naturally. People who use corticosteroids regularly should be aware of the risks of suppressing their body's natural hormone production and making them more vulnerable to infections.

How Betaderm works in the body

Glucocorticoids help to decrease inflammation. They stop neutrophils and NF-Kappa B from stimulating the immune response, and they prevent arachidonic acid derivatives from forming. They also stimulate anti-inflammatory genes like interleukin-10. Betamethasone can act through two pathways. The first is slower and involves activating glucocorticoid receptors and turning on anti-inflammatory genes. The second is faster and uses existing membrane-bound receptors to quickly reduce T-cell, platelet, and monocyte activity.

When to interrupt dosage

The recommended dose of Betaderm depends upon the ascertained condition, such as Ankylosing Spondylitis, Adrenal cortical hypofunctions and Post Surgical Ocular Inflammation. The measure of dosage relies upon the delivery technique (e.g. Topical or Solution - Oral) outlined in the following table.

Betaderm Toxicity & Overdose Risk

Taking too much glucocorticoids can cause blindness (cataracts), increased pressure in the eye (glaucoma), high blood pressure, water retention, high cholesterol, stomach ulcers, inflammation of the pancreas, muscle weakness, changes in mood or behavior, thinning of the skin, allergies, acne, excess hair growth, weakened immunity, diabetes, low calcium or phosphorus levels, acid buildup in the blood, slowed growth in children, and problems with the adrenal glands. To treat overdose, the doctor may adjust the dose or stop giving the corticosteroid and provide treatment to address the symptoms.
