Dinoprostone
The Generic name of this drug
Treatment Summary
Dinoprostone is a prescription drug used to prepare the cervix for labor and induce labor. It is a natural prostaglandin E2 that stimulates the production of certain hormones which help the cervix to soften and open up. It also helps to break down bone tissue, making it easier for the baby to pass through the birth canal.

How Cervidil Affects Patients
Dinoprostone is the same as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). It helps bring on labor and delivery by increasing muscle activity in the uterus, which causes the pregnancy to end. Dinoprostone can also cause increased muscle activity in the stomach and intestines, which can lead to vomiting and diarrhea.
How Cervidil works in the body
Dinoprostone helps empty the uterus by causing the muscles in the uterus to contract in a way similar to labor contractions. We don't know exactly how it works, but one possibility is that it influences calcium movement and a certain type of molecule in the cells. Dinoprostone also causes changes to the cervix, which may be linked to the breakdown of collagen.

Patient Q&A Section about cervidil
These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.
Does Cervidil induce labor?
"Cervidil is a medication that is used to soften the cervix. It is not typically used to induce labor, but some women may experience cramping or mild contractions while it is working."
Answered by AI
Does Cervidil induction hurt?
"Cervidil may cause backache, cramping, or pink vaginal discharge. It usually takes several hours for these effects to occur. In some cases, contractions may come too close together. If this occurs, please contact the Maternal Infant Child Triage Nurse."
Answered by AI
How quickly does Cervidil work?
"CERVIDIL is a medication used to help prepare the cervix for labor. It is typically given as a single dose, and in clinical trials it was successful in ripening the cervix in the majority of patients. Success was defined as either an increase in the Bishop score at 12 hours, vaginal delivery within 12 hours, or a Bishop score of ≥6 at 12 hours."
Answered by AI
What does Cervidil do for labor?
"If your cervix hasn't begun to dilate and relax on its own, CERVIDIL can help to start the process of cervical ripening, which is necessary for labor to begin."
