Treatment Summary
Lincomycin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It was first discovered in the soil in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1906. The drug was approved by the FDA in 1964, but its use has mostly been replaced by its more powerful derivative, clindamycin. Despite this, lincomycin is still sometimes used to treat certain bacterial infections.

How Lincomycin Affects Patients
Lincomycin is an antibiotic taken from a type of bacteria called Streptomyces lincolnensis. It is used to treat bacterial infections, especially those caused by Staphylococcus and Streptococcus bacteria. It can also be used to treat some other types of bacteria, like Haemophilus, and some anaerobic bacteria. When taking lincomycin, care should be taken due to its potential side effects, such as severe skin reactions, colitis, and breathing problems in young children. Elderly patients, those with existing gastrointestinal problems, and those with a history of allergies or asthma
How Lincomycin works in the body
Lincomycin works by attaching to the bacterial ribosome, blocking it from making proteins. It uses an unusual amino acid-sugar combination to do this. This combination forms hydrogen bonds with certain parts of the ribosome, and also allows for a slight rotation of the sugar molecule. This rotation is what allows lincomycin to attach to the ribosome and block it from making proteins. Bacteria can develop resistance to lincomycin by modifying the part of the ribosome that lincomycin attaches to.
When to interrupt dosage
The suggested measure of Lincomycin is based upon the diagnosed condition. The quantity of dosage is contingent upon the technique of delivery (e.g. Injection, solution or Solution - Intramuscular; Intravenous) featured in the table beneath.

Lincomycin Toxicity & Overdose Risk
Not much is known about the effects of an overdose of lincomycin. However, it is known that it can cause severe side effects including stomach issues, secondary infections, and allergic reactions. To treat the overdose, supportive measures like dialysis should be taken. However, dialysis has little to no effect on the amount of lincomycin in the blood.

Is azithromycin a lincomycin?
"Lincocin (lincomycin) is an injectable antibiotic, which is not often used, that treats bacterial infections.
