Summary

This trial examines how using an illusionary mirror affects the way muscles adapt when only one limb is trained. The hypothesis is that the mirror will help the untrained arm get stronger.

Eligible Conditions
  • Weightlifting
  • Physical Therapy/Exercise Therapy

Timeline

Screening ~ 3 weeks
Treatment ~ Varies
Follow Up ~baseline (week 0), mid-training (week 2), post-training (week 5)
This trial's timeline: 3 weeks for screening, Varies for treatment, and baseline (week 0), mid-training (week 2), post-training (week 5) for reporting.

Study Objectives

Outcome measures can provide a clearer picture of what you can expect from a treatment.

Change in dynamic muscle strength for the trained and untrained arm
Change in isometric muscle strength for the trained and untrained arm
Change in lean mass for the trained and untrained arm

Experimental Treatment
Active Control
Group I: Resistance training with mirror illusion groupExperimental Treatment2 Interventions
The resistance training with mirror illusion group will perform unilateral resistance training on their dominant arm. During training, they will view a mirror illusion of their exercising arm over their opposite, non-exercising arm. The training will be performed twice per week for four weeks totaling eight training sessions.
Group II: Resistance training control groupActive Control1 Intervention
The resistance training control group will perform unilateral resistance training on their dominant arm. The training will be performed twice per week for four weeks totaling eight training sessions.
