How Ramelteon Affects Patients

Ramelteon is the first drug specifically designed to imitate the natural hormone melatonin. Melatonin helps regulate our sleep-wake cycle by affecting an area of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nuclei. Ramelteon binds to melatonin receptors located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei and works by mimicking melatonin. It also has an active metabolite that is less potent but circulates in higher concentrations. This metabolite has a weak effect on a receptor called 5HT2b.

How Ramelteon works in the body

Ramelteon helps people fall asleep by mimicking the effects of melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone the body produces in response to darkness that helps signal to the body that it's time to sleep. Ramelteon binds to melatonin receptors in the brain, stimulating sleepiness and aiding in the onset of sleep. It does not interact with any other neurotransmitters, hormones, or receptors, so it only affects the body's sleep cycle.

Ramelteon for Chronic Trouble Sleeping

I've had insomnia for over a year and have tried everything to get rid of it. This drug, in combination with hormone therapy and stress-reducing techniques like EFT (tapping) and CBT, has finally done the trick. I'm so grateful!

Ramelteon for Chronic Trouble Sleeping

I've been struggling to fall asleep soundly for months, but this treatment has finally helped me. I didn't experience any of the negative side effects that I did with other medications, which is great. It took a little while to really take effect (about a week), but it was worth the wait!

I experienced some strange dreams while taking this medication, but they weren't bothersome enough to outweigh the positives.

Ramelteon for Chronic Trouble Sleeping

I find that this medication makes me drowsy during the day, to the point where people might think I'm abusing drugs. I also wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back asleep. All things considered, I think it's better to just not take this medication.

I'm still chronically sleepless, taking the recommended 8mg dosage. I sometimes can manage a short nap in the afternoon, but that's about it.

The cost of this treatment is unfortunately quite high, and I didn't find it helpful for my insomnia at all.

Ramelteon for Chronic Trouble Sleeping

If this medication worked as intended, it would be great. Unfortunately, more often than not it fails to deliver on its promises. When that happens, I end up feeling extremely depressed and sleepless. The next day is always a total wash for me energy-wise. Thankfully, I was able to quit after just six days of use.

Ramelteon for Chronic Trouble Sleeping

Both times I took this medication, I woke up a few hours later unable to fall back asleep. In addition, the next morning I noticed my face was swollen. This has led me to believe that Ambien would be better for me.

Ramelteon for Chronic Trouble Sleeping

I've given this medication a month's chance, and it has not helped me sleep in the slightest. If anything, I feel more exhausted from lack of sleep and taking this pill. I'm seeing my psychiatrist soon to ask for something else; Ambien made me feel horrible the next day, Belsomra and Rozerem did nothing at all, while Xanax sometimes worked. 100% reliable help is what I need every night; insomnia is already too much to handle!
