What is Xalatan

LatanoprostThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryLatanoprost is a medication used to reduce pressure inside the eyes and treat glaucoma. It was first approved by the FDA in 1998 and is the first topical prostaglandin F2 alpha analog used for glaucoma treatment. Latanoprost is generally very well-tolerated and does not cause any systemic side effects, like other drugs used for elevated intraocular pressure. Additionally, it can be administered once a day, making it easier to take than other glaucoma medications.

Effectiveness

How Xalatan Affects PatientsLatanoprost helps reduce pressure in the eye by increasing the drainage of fluid from the eye. The effects are usually felt within a few hours and can last for up to a day. There is a risk of eye and periorbital changes, such as changes to the color of the iris, redness around the eyes, darkening of the eyelashes, extra hair growth around the eyes, and irritation in the eye. These changes can occur after taking latanoprost for as little as three months.
How Xalatan works in the bodyLatanoprost is used to treat high eye pressure, which can cause damage to the optic nerve and loss of vision. Latanoprost stimulates certain receptors in the eye, resulting in increased fluid drainage from the eye. This lowers the pressure and reduces the risk of damage to the optic nerve. The increased drainage is probably due to changes in the tissue surrounding the drainage pathways, which makes it easier for fluid to flow out.

Xalatan for Wide-Angle Glaucoma
I've been using this combination of Timolol and Xalatan for the past three years, and it has done an amazing job of restoring my IOPs to a healthy level. Not to mention, it has also prevented any further loss of visual field.

Xalatan for Wide-Angle Glaucoma
I've been using this medicine for years to manage my blood pressure and it's working great. However, in the past year I've developed severe cold hands and feet that can be quite painful at times. My doctor says there's nothing wrong with me medically, so I'm wondering if this could be an undocumented side effect of xalatan? Has anyone else had a similar reaction?

Xalatan for Increased Pressure in the Eye
I experienced no negative side effects from this medication. It successfully lowered my blood pressure from 32 to 16 over the course of two years. I was recently switched to a generic version due to changes in my insurance, but it is not working as well for me.

Xalatan for Increased Pressure in the Eye
I took this drug for a long time and it worked great, but sadly it stopped being effective about a year ago. My doctor has been trying to find a new combination of drugs that will work for me, but the side effects of all the other options have been really tough to deal with.

Xalatan for Increased Pressure in the Eye
The price tag on this varies depending on where you look. I get "dry eye" from being on the computer frequently, so these help me out a lot. Make sure to ask your doctor about which kind would be best for you specifically, as they all have different purposes. Also, if you ever feel like there's something foreign in your eye(s), try using this medication alongside Azopt; it helped me control my eye pressure for over 10 years now. And a little tip: set an alarm or reminder of some sort to not forget taking theseeye drops!

Xalatan for Wide-Angle Glaucoma
I've been using this medication for approximately one month now. So far, my doctor says that the pressure in my eye has decreased--which is great news. I have noticed, however, that there's been an increase in mucus production in both of my eyes since starting the drops; though, to be fair, I haven't seen this listed as a common side-effect anywhere. Regardless, he gave me some other drops to use for itching and told me to keep monitoring the situation.

Xalatan for Increased Pressure in the Eye
I've been using this medication for a few years now off and on, both the generic and brand name. Recently, I've developed some serious hip/joint pain that is really affecting my quality of life. I'm going to mention it to my doctor at my next appointment, as I never would have guessed that the Xalatan could be the cause. The pain is bad enough that it wakes me up at night, but not during the day.

Xalatan for Increased Pressure in the Eye
I was using Lumigan for ten years when my drug insurer said they would no longer cover the cost. They suggested I try Latanaprost instead, and after a few weeks of use, my readings had jumped from the teens to the mid-20s. Now I buy Lumigan from a Canadian pharmacy.

Xalatan for Increased Pressure in the Eye
I started experiencing joint and muscle pain a few weeks after I began taking this medication. My eye doctor said it wasn't the cause, but it's the only thing I can think of. The past week, I stopped using the drug, but I'm still in a lot of pain. Does anyone know how long this side effect lasts?

Xalatan for Wide-Angle Glaucoma
I used Betoptic for 23 years before it stopped being effective. I was prescribed Xalatan, which did help with the pressure but came with a host of other problems like joint and muscle pain, hair thinning, and chronic hives. I'm on a different medication now called Drozolamid Timolol and will be seeing an opthalmologist next month.

Xalatan for Increased Pressure in the Eye
I had really bad reactions to this, including swollen and blistered lips, incredibly painful teeth, headaches, and mental confusion. I stopped using it and after a few weeks things got better, but as soon as I started using it again the problems came back within days.

Xalatan for Increased Pressure in the Eye
Though this drug lowers eye pressure as intended, the side effects are incredibly severe. I experienced dizziness, vomiting, and blurred vision after only five months of use. Additionally, I felt weak and had a racing heart beat. Once I stopped using the drops, all symptoms disappeared. Overall, I don't think the trade-off is worth it; there are other options available that don't come with such intense drawbacks.

Xalatan for Increased Pressure in the Eye
This medication helped to reduce my eye pressure, but the dryness and irritation it caused was really terrible. I had to stop taking it multiple times because of how bad the side effects were. And, looking back, every time I started taking this medicine again I would have dark and depressing thoughts. Thankfully, I haven't used it in over a year and those neurological side effects are gone now.

These eyedrops were terrible for me. Within a week of using them, I was having chest pain and flu-like symptoms on top of being incredibly insomnia. Two weeks later and the side effects are still present.

Xalatan for Increased Pressure in the Eye
The combination of Xalatan and Timolol had disastrous side effects, characterized by redness, blurring, sensitivety to sunlight, and corneal pain when blinking. In other words, over medication! Episodes lasted a week or more. Timolol alone was effective without any of these side effects.

Xalatan for Increased Pressure in the Eye
I took this drug for a short while and experienced intense pain in my shoulder and back, making it hard to swallow. The chest constriction was so bad that I thought I was having a heart attack! I had to go to the ER for blood work, cardio tests, and X-rays. Thankfully, I stopped taking the drug last night and feel almost normal again this morning--although there is still some lingering chest constriction.
