Trial Summary

What is the purpose of this trial? In this SBIR, ALTality, Inc. ("SpellBound") will assess the feasibility of a dual English/Spanish language augmented reality(AR)-enabled tool for assessing inpatient postoperative pain/nausea/vomiting in Hispanic/Latino children and adolescents with cancer in collaboration with bilingual Spanish-speaking anesthesiologists at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. If successful, the AR app will be an immediately implementable and commercially viable method of providing Hispanic/Latino pediatric cancer patients with limited English proficiency an adjunctive tool to overcome infrastructural barriers to receiving translation services in acute care settings that put them at higher risk of under and/or overtreatment of pain by prescription opioids and future prescription opioid dependency and misuse, at no cost to them or their families.

Eligibility Criteria

This trial is for Hispanic/Latino children and adolescents with cancer who are recovering from surgery. It's designed to help those who speak Spanish, English, or both. The goal is to test an app that could make it easier for them to communicate their pain levels in hospitals.

Inclusion Criteria

I am currently diagnosed with cancer as a child.
I am between 7 and 17 years old.
Child able to provide assent, and a legal guardian able to provide informed consent

I have used opioids daily for the last 30 days before my surgery.
I cannot use the SpellBound app with English or Spanish instructions.

Participant Groups

The study is testing a mobile augmented reality (AR) app that helps assess pain, nausea, and vomiting in pediatric cancer patients post-surgery. This bilingual tool aims to improve care by bridging language barriers between patients and healthcare providers.
