Ibuprofen was patented in 1961 and was first released to treat rheumatoid arthritis in the UK in 1969 and the US in 1974. It is available over-the-counter in the form of a racemic mixture, meaning it contains both the R- and S-enantiomers. Ibuprofen can also help with dental procedures, menstrual pain, and migraines. It may also reduce neurodegeneration and help with Parkinson's Disease and breast cancer.
How Ibuprofen works in the bodyIbuprofen works by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase. This enzyme helps create substances called prostaglandins, which cause pain and fever. Ibuprofen stops the production of prostaglandins, which reduces inflammation, pain, fever, and swelling. However, blocking this enzyme can also lead to side effects like stomach ulcers.
