Azelastine was approved by the FDA in 1996 and is sometimes combined with fluticasone propionate as a nasal spray called Dymista, which is used to treat seasonal allergies in people 6 years and older.

How Astelin Affects Patients
Azelastine works by blocking the effects of histamine, which helps relieve allergy symptoms. The effects of this drug can be felt as quickly as 15 minutes after taking intranasal formulations or 3 minutes after taking ophthalmic solutions. Taking intranasal formulations produces peak effects 4-6 hours after the initial dose, and these effects are maintained for 12 hours.
