Treatment Summary

Ibuprofen is a common medication used to reduce pain and inflammation. It was first developed in 1960 as a safer alternative to aspirin and was approved for use in the UK in 1969 and in the US in 1974. It is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and is available over-the-counter. Ibuprofen is a racemic mixture, meaning that it is made up of two enantiomers. The S-enantiomer is thought to be more effective than the R-enantiomer at providing relief from pain and inflammation.

How Neoprofen Affects Patients

Ibuprofen is a painkiller and fever reducer used to reduce inflammation in acute and chronic conditions. It is most commonly used to reduce pain, fever, and inflammation by blocking the production of substances (prostanoids) that cause these symptoms. Ibuprofen can also reduce pain by affecting the central nervous system and increasing the production of endorphins. It is used in dental procedures to reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain. Ibuprofen may be taken to reduce joint pain caused by rheumatic diseases, reduce menstrual pain, reduce fever and pain caused by migraines, and reduce neurodegeneration.

How Neoprofen works in the body

We don't know exactly how ibuprofen works, but we think it blocks certain enzymes called cyclooxygenases. These enzymes make pain and fever mediators called prostaglandins. Blocking these enzymes reduces inflammation, pain, fever, and swelling. Ibuprofen blocks two types of cyclooxygenases: COX-1 and COX-2. Blocking COX-2 is what reduces inflammation but blocking COX-1 can lead to side effects like stomach ulcers.

Neoprofen Toxicity & Overdose Risk

Overdosing on ibuprofen may cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, dizziness, insomnia, headaches, loss of consciousness, ringing in the ears, confusion, seizures, and difficulty breathing. These symptoms are reported to occur in individuals who have consumed more than 99mg/kg. In rare cases, it may also lead to metabolic acidosis, abnormal liver function, high levels of potassium in the blood, kidney failure, and coma (especially in very young children). The lowest toxic dose of ibuprofen has been found to be 636mg/kg in rats, 740mg/kg in

Neoprofen for Failure of a Blood Vessel of the Heart to Close at Birth

I don't think this drug is safe for newborns. I've seen it used a few times and every single time there were negative side effects, some of which were very serious.

Pain Medicines for Period Pain in Crohn's Disease

18 - 44
Female
Chapel Hill, NC

The purpose of this pilot study is to prepare for a larger study that will compare the effectiveness and safety of two common pain medications, ibuprofen and acetaminophen, to help treat period cramps in women with Crohn's disease. The goal of this study is to identify any challenges in running a larger study. The investigators will track how many people sign up for the study, how well participants follow the study plan, how many people stay in the study, and whether they are able to complete all the study activities, such as taking the medication, submitting samples, and filling out surveys. During the study, participants will undergo a screening visit that includes a blood draw, physical exam, pregnancy test, stool testing, and complete surveys about Crohn's disease and menstrual cycles. Once this visit is complete, the rest of the study will occur at home. Participants will be assigned to take either ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help treat period cramps for four menstrual cycles in a row. Participants will take ibuprofen for two cycles and acetaminophen for two cycles. Participants will know which medication is being taken at any given time, but the order in which they take the medications will be randomly assigned. Before each menstrual cycle, participants will submit a stool sample and fill out a short (\<1 minute) electronic survey. When participants develop period cramps, they will take the assigned medication for three days and fill out short (\<1 minute) electronic surveys about their cramps. After participants finish taking the medication for three days, they will submit another stool sample and fill out two more short (\<1 minute) electronic surveys. After have completing this process for four menstrual cycles, a remote interview with a researcher to give feedback on the study will be conducted.

SBS-147 Safety Study

18 - 55
All Sexes
Cypress, CA

This study is part of the HEAL Initiative supported by the NIH. The purpose of this study is to learn how safe the study drug, SBS-147, is and how people's bodies respond to and process it. Researchers will also look for any side effects that may occur when taking SBS-147. Some participants will receive SBS-147, and others will receive a placebo, which looks the same but does not contain any medicine. This helps researchers fairly compare results. The study includes two parts: Single-Dose Group, where Participants receive SBS-147 or placebo one time. Multiple-Dose Group, where Participants receive SBS-147 or placebo once or twice daily for 7 days.

Oxygen Concentration for Premature Birth

No minimum age - 10
All Sexes
Edmonton, Canada

This study is aims to examine the best amount of oxygen to give preterm babies (born between 32 and 35 weeks) right after birth. In the past, doctors used high levels of oxygen, but research has shown that using lower levels might help reduce the risk of death in full-term babies without harming brain development. However, investigators don't know the best oxygen level for babies born a little early (32 to 35 weeks). Some early data suggests that giving lower oxygen levels (FiO2 0.3) may not help babies reach healthy oxygen levels by 5 minutes after birth. This study will compare two oxygen levels-FiO2 0.6 and FiO2 0.3 to see which helps babies breathe better and need less ongoing breathing support. Researchers will study over 1,500 babies in hospitals across Alberta, Canada, to find the safest approach for these babies.
